The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (“CMS”) has announced the Medicare Part A deductibles and Part B premiums for 2020. Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital and hospice care, while Part B covers outpatient services such as doctors’ visits.
The Part A deductible for inpatient hospital expenses will be $1,408 in 2020, a $44 increase over the prior year (from $1,364 in 2019). For the 61st through 90th day of hospitalization, the per diem coinsurance cost will be $352 ($341 in 2019), while hospital stays over 90 days will cost $704 per day ($682 per day in 2019). Daily coinsurance for the 21st to 100th day in a skilled nursing facility will cost $176.00 in 2020 ($170.50 in 2019).
The standard Medicare Part B monthly premium for 2020 will, for most individuals, be $144.60 (an increase from $135.50 in 2019). As required by the Medicare Modernization Act, single beneficiaries with incomes over $87,000 and married couples with incomes of over $174,000 will pay a higher Part B premium, based on a sliding scale.
The annual deductible for all Medicare Part B beneficiaries is $198 in 2020 (an increase of $13 from the annual deductible of $185 in 2019).
